The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) plays a key role in supporting reading and literacy within the academy. It helps raise standards and maximises progress for all students through development of independent learning, and encouraging reading for information and pleasure.

Outside of lessons and for quiet time, research or recreational reading, students can use the resource centre in their own time with its stock of 10,000 books, journals and computers. The centre is staffed throughout the day.

To support literacy development, we utilise software called Accelerated Reading. This reading management software programme has a strong incentives scheme with the programme including baseline assessment and re-testing six times per year. All progress is recorded on the database. Students are guided to read age and ability appropriate books with online tests to gauge their understanding. Results are constantly monitored with reading intervention plans implemented where necessary. Each student has a series of targets set for them together with a reading homework log to enable them to record their daily reading and share with parents/carers, form tutors and English teachers.

Catch-up premium

Through the catch-up premium scheme, East Leake Academy offers additional support with literacy and numeracy for each year 7 student who did not achieve at least level 4 in reading and/or maths at the end of key stage 2.
