Curriculum intent
At East Leake Academy, the Personal Development curriculum is designed to prepare all our students to embrace opportunities and navigate the challenges they will face both now and in the future. Rooted in our academy values of Empower, Respect, Care, the curriculum supports students in developing a strong sense of self and understanding their role within both the local and global community.
In an increasingly complex world, we are committed to equipping our students with the essential knowledge and skills to stay safe, be healthy, and manage their academic, personal, and social lives with confidence and resilience. At East Leake Academy, Personal Development empowers students to respond to key issues they encounter in their daily lives such as peer pressure, online safety, mental health and wellbeing, and managing change as well as local contextual challenges relevant to our community, including health education priorities identified in Nottinghamshire’s Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA).
Our curriculum enables students to make informed, responsible decisions in all areas of life from navigating social media safely to preparing for their first job interview. It is taught with sensitivity and inclusivity, ensuring that all students feel respected and represented, regardless of their background or beliefs. At East Leake Academy, we work in partnership with families to reinforce the values taught at home and meet the personal and pastoral needs of our students.
Our overarching aim is to prepare young people to be well-rounded individuals, safe, healthy, and respectful citizens who make positive contributions to a diverse and inclusive society. Through Personal Development, we promote a deep understanding of fundamental British values, celebrate our commonalities, and foster respect for the protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act 2010.
The design of our personal development curriculum is intentional and carefully considered. It reflects the specific needs of our student body and the unique context of East Leake and the wider Nottinghamshire area. We use a wide range of sources to inform our curriculum planning, including data from Public Health England’s CHIMAT profiles, student voice, and our own in-depth knowledge of our school community. Every element of the curriculum has been deliberately chosen to benefit our students’ personal growth and success.
