East Leake Academy is passionate about helping students explore the wide range of opportunities available to them in the future and this summer term has been exceptionally special.

On 2 July, a group of year 8 and 9 students visited Derby University for an exciting hands-on careers experience. Working with local employers including Stepnell, Balfour Beatty, and JCB, students completed practical challenges and gained valuable insight into different industries. The visit also gave them the chance to explore the university campus, experience undergraduate life, and see the fantastic facilities on offer.

Meanwhile, in late June, members of the academy’s careers team were invited to learn more about the horse racing industry. Staff met a range of professionals, including race commentators, race stewards, starters, and those responsible for ensuring the welfare of both jockeys and horses. It was inspiring to discover the diverse career pathways available within this unique sector.

On Tuesday 14 July, a group of East Leake Academy students enjoyed an informative and engaging visit to East Midlands Airport, where they gained valuable insight into the wide range of careers available within the aviation industry.

The visit included hands-on experiences and the opportunity to hear from industry professionals about their roles and career journeys.

Students first met Steve from the airport’s security team, who explained how the airport’s new 3D scanning technology is used to enhance security procedures. He also outlined the key skills and qualities required to work in airport security.

As part of Youth Skills Day, students also attended a presentation by Max, who discussed how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used across the airport to improve operational efficiency and enhance the customer experience.

The visit provided students with a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at airport operations and highlighted the diverse range of career opportunities available in one of the region’s busiest transport hubs. It was a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world applications and explore potential future career pathways.

We are delighted to have secured an invitation for students to visit the National Horseracing College next year, providing yet another opportunity to broaden horizons and inspire future career aspirations.

At ELA, we are committed to connecting students with real-world experiences that help them make informed choices about their futures.
